While on a special trip with our oldest son, we found Deep Creek Winery nestled in the mountains of Bryson City, NC. We had been on the road for a bit and were relieved that there was a quaint stopping place that was both adult and kid-friendly. Thank you to ncwine.org for including this family owned winery on your list of 180+ wineries in NC.
The beautiful scenic drive to Deep Creek included rivers, mountains, and wildlife. Fair warning, there are a few twisty, narrow roads. Despite the spotty rain showers, we were able to find it just fine and parked at the top of a hill, overlooking the stunning Great Smoky Mountains. Our son was greeted by a sweet German Shepherd that insisted he play fetch with him.

Deep Creek Winery‘s tasting room is unique and is the perfect size for multiple groups to enjoy a variety of wines. Owners Rob and Heather Acton worked very hard to turn a local horse barn into a gorgeous, fully-functioning tasting room, in addition to a fermentation room, and a finishing room. Wooden planks from the horse stalls adorn the walls and a handcrafted bar greets guests at the entrance. Deep Creek was established in 2015 and opened its doors to the tasting room in 2016.
This is a young winery that does not have a vineyard on site. Although Deep Creek has their grapes imported from California, all of the wine is made in house by Rob, who has been making wine for almost a decade. We enjoyed seeing and tasting what a winemaker does with California grapes in our own backyard. The wines were full of flavor and aromas. We were both able to taste the white flight, consisting of five wines, and four wines of the red flight (their 5th red wine just sold out the week before our visit). Each wine was very distinct with their flavors. We’ll share pairings and descriptions in a later blog post.
If you’re visiting NC and are looking for picturesque mountain views while sipping refreshing wine, check out Deep Creek Winery. We had a great time talking with Heather and Rob. Even the rain couldn’t dampen our spirits as the metal roof provided a symphony of relaxing sounds.

Because this winery is so young and they’re already able to do so much with California grapes, we’re curious if there will be a North Carolina vineyard connection in the future. We can only imagine that Deep Creek would continue to create and share fantastic wines.
This sounds like an interesting winery to visit, would love to try the wines.
Thanks for sharing 🙂
